Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Getting started

Can I try a run before joining?

Absolutely. Come out to a club run, a race or a social event and see if we’re a good fit. There’s no pressure to sign up on day one. Check the Club Runs page for this week’s schedule.

Will everyone be faster than me?

No. Our members range from sub-30-minute 10K runners to people finishing in well over an hour, and some members walk for fitness. Whatever your pace, you’ll find people running it with you. You don’t need to get faster before you join. Running with a club is one of the best ways to improve.

What should I bring to my first run?

Comfortable running shoes, weather-appropriate layers (this is Victoria) and water if you’re heading out for an hour. Trail runs can be muddy in the wet months, so shoes with some grip help. Introduce yourself when you arrive and someone will make sure you’re with the right group.

I’m visiting Victoria. Can I run with you?

Yes, and it’s free. Visitors are welcome at any club run. Drop us a note before you come and we’ll point you to the best run for your dates.

Club runs

Where do you run?

All over Greater Victoria. Club favourites include Thetis Lake, Beaver Lake, Cedar Hill Golf Course and the Galloping Goose Trail. [CONFIRM current locations] Times and meeting spots are on the Club Runs page.

How far and how fast do you run?

It depends on the run. Saturday runs at Thetis Lake take about an hour. A Cedar Hill loop takes about 20 minutes, so you can do as many laps as you like. Beaver Lake offers a 10K trail. We usually have a quicker group running 4:20 to 5:00 per km (7:00 to 8:00 per mile) and a relaxed group running 5:35 to 6:15 per km (9:00 to 10:00 per mile). [CONFIRM pace groups]

Membership

How do I join, and what does it cost?

You can sign up online on the Membership page. Annual fees are listed there along with family and student options. [CONFIRM registration platform and fee types]

What do I get as a member?

Members get discounts at local running stores and on race entries, subsidized club uniforms and travel assistance for some events. [CONFIRM current perks] The real benefit is being part of the club: racing, running relays, joining clinics, volunteering at our events and getting together at socials.

What happens after I join?

We’ll add you to the club email list so you hear about runs, races and socials. After that, how involved you get is up to you. The club hosts eight or more races a year, and our members help organize many others, including the Victoria Marathon, TC10K, Goddess Run, VICCA, ABIN and the Douglas Mile. There’s always a way to pitch in if you want to. [CONFIRM race list]

Who are the members?

More than 300 people of all ages and from all walks of life join each year, from first-time runners to masters competitors. [CONFIRM count]
